The Reg No. is JP 681 and JP was introduced in 1934. I think this may have a connection with him somewhere.
Dad worked for Massey Bros on the shop floor as a coach builder from 1926-1936 the started at Santus Motor bodies in Powell St.
It is more likely to be a Santus bodied coach.
Stuart- I did think about Santus Motor Bodies but don't have any info on them even though my dad worked for them between 1936-1945. There are books about NC & MB which I have but if anyone has details of Santus's please let me know.
My elder sister can only remember going to the premises on a Saturday lunch time when the shift ended.(She was about 7 or 8 at the time.)
super luxury radio coach I wonder if it was one of the first to be fitted with a radio so the passengers could listen while they out and about
Having been to the Wigan Museum (the staff very helpful), I found further information on Santus Motor Bodies company. Around the 1935-37 era they were renowned for turning out Luxury Coaches to a high standard. I have found that the above coach it is not Bee Hire but Bee Hive, Lostock and similiar coaches built at the time had a similar logo but with a different name. One photograph held in the museum depicts ED 8919 coach with Ashton Coach Luxury written on it. Santus closed down in September 1953 as orders dried up for their products having started up in 1906. According to the piece in the Wigan Observer at the time, the sale of the equipment etc attracted a lot of interest from around the UK and further afield. Father worked for Santus between 1936-1945 both on the shop floor and as a manager /supervisor.
JP 681 Leyland Tiger TS6 with Santus 32 seat luxury coach body. New to Fairclough Brothers in March 1935, sold by them in 1947 and ran with two other owners until 1958.
