My Uncle George Bryson worked for Middleton & Woods in the late 1940s when I lived with my Aunt & Uncle in Dicconson Steet, the part of the street that was demolished.

Whenever I see one of the old ads for Middleton and Woods, I chuckle at the possibly apocryphal tale about Manny Lowe, who was a street corner bookie around Wigan in the 1940s and 50s . . .
Many years ago, in the pre-STD dialling days, he found himself stranded up at the Rigbye Arms at Wrightington, and needful of transport back into Wigan, so went into the phone box up there, to phone a taxi.
He was unable to get through, and dialled the Operator. The subsequent conversation went something like this . . .
Manny: “Aye, Ah’m i’ that telephone cossack up at High Moor, trying fer t’phone Middleton an’Woods fer a taxi, but Ah con’t get through”.
Operator: “What number are you dialling Sir?”
Manny: “Why, Ah’m phonin’ t’number on their advert i’ th’Evenin’ Post an’ Chronicle – EST 1919”.

I surmise that this is a pre war advert that has been "recycled" as the style of dress of the woman in the advert is very 30's.

Agree with you A.W about this ad originating from the thirties. Looks like there was a fair degree of artistic licence with regards to the amount of space in the rear of their cars!

I noticed that as well A W. The hat is very 1930s, after the war the hats, if you could afford one were very different, also during & after WW2 the dress lengths were shorter as material was more expensive.
