Wigan Album

I can see a Catterall -more than likely related to my ancestors. They originated in UpHolland as far back as 1709 and there were many of them. My grt Uncle William was also killed in July of the same year.

My granddad is on this list,(killed) R. Moore Lancashire Fusiliers Lance Sgt.

The Wigan Archives site lists many Catteralls who went off to the war -

My Great Uncle, Peter Peet, was killed by a German sniper in 1916 in Belgium.He lived in Queen Street, Pemberton and had been a miner who left a wife and a young daughter.

Peter Peet was shot by a sniper - but at Passchendaele (which is in Belgium, near Ypres) on August 16th, 1917. You'll find further details and a pic of him on the site I've given above.

Iv just found out last year what happened to my Great Uncle Timothy Smith.. He was killed in action in Mesopotamia Campaign in 1920.. he was only 18 yrs old even though the War had ended conflicts were still going on.. Recently found his name on Basra War Memorial in Iraq…
My dad is is John Lees and 96yrs was over the moon when told him.. in those days no one knew what happened.. or talked about him.. This campaign was in London Observer and mentioned on the radio by Sir Winston Churchill..
