back row-3rd from left Fred Taylor my dad age 24 years not yet married to my mum Mary Heyes.4th John Greenall.7th Jimmy Topping.2nd row from front and 2nd in Tom Penk. Other surnames would be Moreman and Kniveton

Would that be Jimmy Topping who used to have the cobblers in Fishergate?

Comment by: Jean Lambert nee Taylor on 29th May 2008 at 22:03

As far as I remember Jimmy Topping only had a shoe repair shop in Lamberhead Green on Ormskirk Road opposite Loch Street. He used to have a little moving cobbler man in the shop window and a Mr Meltonion figure on the counter. Hope this information helps.

I was Bandmaster during the time Jean Taylor was a member and my father is the first man in the Trombone section. My wife's father is 2nd from the right front row Ernest Kniveton. The Bandmaster was Ernest Roper.

Thanks for that Jean. The shop was in fact on Orrell Road, known locally at that particular point as Fishergate.
I knew Jimmy well in his later years.

I think that might be a young Fred Quartermain on the front row second from the right, on double bass.

The bass drum player was james laithwaite-known as jimmy. He is sat immediately to the left of the drum as you look at the photo. He was my great grandfather.

Tom Penk - this is my relative but unsure if this is Tom my great grandad or Tom the brother of my grandad, Henry Penk, who was married to Elizabeth Linda Penk.

Comment by: DotM on 19th August 2014 at 22:57

Tom Penk,I think he is second on the left second row and is a trombone player. He later joined the band in Wigan. His son Brian and family are members of the Wigan Salvation Army now.

Is there still a corps in Lamberhead Green. My Grandmother served in 1912/3 Lieutenant Bessie Jones, lived 29 Chapel Street. L.G. Are there any records available?

Comment by: David Bowler on 19th May 2016 at 14:15

My Mum’s family - the Pilkingtons -were all involved in The Salvation Army at Lamberhead Green in the 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond.

Comment by: Jean Lambert on 17th August 2023 at 16:14

Hi Johnny. I grew up with your LHG family. Went to your mums commissioning as a little girl and your mum officiated at my mums funeral because your mum and my mum were friends.

I'm informed the gent seated first left on the front row is Tommy Pilkington.
He and his wife May had May's chippy in Fishergate for many years - up until the 1980s.
Best fish and chips for miles around.
