Further to the recent comments on the Bryn Street, Ashton photo. Here's the classic Silver Cross Pram. Purchased in 1965 from Howard's who had shops on Wallgate and Market Street in Wigan and Market Street in Hindley. The pram cost £36.7s.6d. with an additional £1.19s.11d. for the bag.

A classic, proper pram. I still see one here where I live but only in the summer mind, like a classic car it doesn't come out in the rain !

Comment by: Garry on 17th February 2017 at 15:19

In 1965 this pram cost £36-7s.6d in today's money 2017 that would come to almost £700.

A very good looking pram it used to drag you down the hills
and you got a sweat on pushing it up hill but lots of people
wanted one .D.C.

Well isn't that a beautiful pram..I can't remember my Pram for my first two little un's,but do recall the one for the third child ten years later was a Marmet..how I loved pushing my prams..the trouble and sad time came when I walked out after they'd become too old to be in one,I felt quite lost..
Thank you for this photo Arthur..it brings back so many memories.

This is similar to ours, but the rear wheels look bigger, ours was a balmoral and it was bought in 1959.

Comment by: Veronica B on 17th February 2017 at 18:55

As I said before in the other comment these were the 'Rolls Royce ' of prams. In the seventies young girls went for the trendier and smaller versions and these days to own a Silver Cross pram has become a status symbol as seen when the Duchess of Cambridge brought the old royal pram out of storage when her daughter was baptised.

Comment by: Janette R on 17th February 2017 at 19:35

Had a dark brown Silver Cross pram for my son in 1974, which I used for my daughter, born 1977, as well. Not as rounded as this version, but it was always easy to handle.

Beautiful used to walk miles and in the summer the hood went down and the canopy with a fringe was fitted. Memories.

Comment by: Linda Massa on 18th February 2017 at 06:34

Today it would cost £1450.00.

Comment by: Garry on 18th February 2017 at 09:04

It was easy to push Derick because of it's very large wheels, smaller wheels you had to put your back into it.
As Veronica rightly says the RR of prams.

Comment by: Maurice on 18th February 2017 at 09:24

The Balmoral pram costs £1450,and is still being made,we paid £5 for ours, and it was like new,it was still quite a lot though, our rent was 25 shillings a week at the time,we lived in Bryn then.

Not much hope of me ever realising my ambition of owning a trolley with Silver Cross wheels then is there ?

Comment by: Maurice. on 18th February 2017 at 12:13

There are lots of Silver Cross wheels for sale on Ebay Ozy,go on make a trolley, you know you want to.

I had a coach built Silver Cross pram in navy blue with the new navy blue interior bought from Howards on Market Street. It was called a super Picasso as it had a flower on the side and a slightly different chassis. It was a pleasure to push both my children one 1970 and 1972 in it.

Comment by: Willie on 19th February 2017 at 09:59

That's a big pram I'm surprised Jarvo still manages to get out of it.

Comment by: Garry on 19th February 2017 at 16:06

What a silly comment from Willie.

I personally consider it to be a travesty on humanity, that Silver Cross can be asking, and some people no doubt are willing to shell out, £1,450 for a mere perambulator, when the shop doorways of our towns and cities are chock full of homeless cider junkies and crack addicts, reduced to having to beg for their sustenance. My heart also goes out to the hordes of impoverished young people of Wigan who I see on a daily basis, traipsing around town, texting their friends, with their designer label jeans in tatters. Surely things couldn't have been as dire as this, even in the dark days of the 30's depression.

Comment by: Garry on 20th February 2017 at 09:06

Ozy you pay for what you get. Just like cars, tools etc.
It's the quality made by hand from craftsmen.

Comment by: . Ozymandias . on 20th February 2017 at 09:51

It's a box on wheels Garry, a nice looking box, on nice looking wheels admittedly, but it's still only a box on wheels. Princess Diana may have stumped up 1,450 quid for a box on wheels, but I certainly wouldn't. Would you Garry ? I suspect not. Just think of all the coal and sherry that you you could buy with 1,450 quid.

Comment by: Garry on 20th February 2017 at 11:46

NO Ozy you've got it completely wrong, so your telling me that a mini is in the same class as a Mercedes, aftermarket parts are better than genuine parts, a £10 drill from aldi is better that a Bosch drill from Entwistle & Joynt. A lot of Mothers only want the best from their baby especially when it's their first child.
I totally disagree with you with this one, these prams are the best in the business and as I said before, you pay for what you get, simple as that.

Comment by: Mary on 20th February 2017 at 14:30

A box on wheels is disrespectful you make it sound like a coffin to me. I agree with most on here, a very classy pram.

Comment by: . Ozymandias . on 20th February 2017 at 15:26

Now don't be putting words in my mouth Garry, I'm not telling you anything of the kind. Where have I compared a Merc to a Mini ? or a Bosch drill to a cheap Chinese import ? No, if I'm telling you anything at all, it's that in my opinion, anyone who's prepared to spend £1,450.00 on a pram deserves to have their money taken off them, as they obviously can't be trusted with money. Look, why don't you buy the pram and I'll buy the sherry, then we can both ferry the booze up to my humble bothy using your overpriced pram ?

Comment by: . Ozymandias . on 20th February 2017 at 16:24

I can't honestly say that I've ever seen a coffin with wheels on Mary. Now that would be a novelty. It would certainly save on the cost of hiring a hearse and pallbearers. Mind you, they wouldn't have to be Silver Cross wheels, as they're far too expensive.

Comment by: Garry on 20th February 2017 at 16:32

I'm putting things in perspective, not putting things in your mouth, Ozy. The cars and drill are an example. Why shouldn't proud mothers buy one of these prams if they can afford one. Mums and dads want the best for their baby and these prams were the best and safest around at that time.

Comment by: Alison on 20th February 2017 at 16:41

Quality always comes at a cost, these prams are in that category, top draw. Most new mothers had one.

Comment by: Howard P on 20th February 2017 at 18:06

Aww so we have cider junkies and crack addicts in our doorways, so ladies, don't buy a good quality pram like a S/Cross, when your babies due, instead hand your hard earned money over to all Junkies of Wigan. Honestly give me strength.

Comment by: VeronicaB on 20th February 2017 at 18:52

Think Ozy is speaking metaphorically by describing the pram as a 'box on wheels'! We all know the pram is distinctively engineered and is a 'top of the range' commodity for babies! Decidedly out of reach for most people to buy these days admittedly. If there wasn't a market for them -then nobody would buy them-simple as that!

Comment by: . Ozymandias . on 20th February 2017 at 20:20

I take it that satire's beyond your comprehension then Howard. Would that be a fair assessment ?

Comment by: Howard P on 20th February 2017 at 21:06

Silver Cross prams are sold in 70 Countries World Wide, more than 10 Million parents have chosen the product.

Comment by: Howard P on 20th February 2017 at 21:23

By the 1960s, Silver Cross was established as Britain's Premier pram manufacturer. It continued to manufacturer classic coach-built prams, but new designs were launched to meet the high demands of modern families. Silver Cross was now a household name and trusted by parents worldwide. Not bad for an expensive pram!

Comment by: Mary on 20th February 2017 at 21:34

Is cider junkies and crack addicts speaking metaphorically too Veronica when comparing them to parents who wish to purchase a Silver Pram product.

Comment by: Veronica B on 20th February 2017 at 21:54

Actually Mary I was clearly taking about the pram,

Comment by: Mary on 21st February 2017 at 06:18

I'm asking you, is Ozy speaking Metaphorically as well when he mentions the junkies against the pram.?
I don't think so.

Comment by: Veronica B on 21st February 2017 at 08:12

Correct my comment is about the pram and nothing else....good for you!
