Enjoyed quite a few pints of Almond's bitter, in the White Horse, in Standishgate, with several of my Wigan Borough Police colleagues, when we met up after Friday's pay day, in the late fifties. You were paid, weekly, in cash, in those days. Almond's bitter, always had a beautiful nutty taste.

The Boars Head Pub was my favourite Almonds pub and full of character. Is it still their. My memory of Almonds is that when it was good it was very good, but that it could vary a lot - like a lot of real ale. Now it would be prized ads a craft beer, but in the late 60's most wanted tasteless fizzy keg beer.

Almonds was an acquired taste, but like most beers you soon acquired it if you drank enough.

Yes Ken that was my Grandad's(Robert Schofield) pub remember it very well. Number 9 Ormskirk Road Newtown. He passed away there on Easter Monday 31st March 1959 after sustaining injuries after falling out of one of Almonds dray wagons whilst alighting from it after being given a lift the previous Thursday. I Believe that he was very well respected by the drivers and the public of Newtown by the turnout for his funeral. I understand the building is still in existence and being used as a clearance warehouse ??

The saying used to be that Almonds didn't travel well and that the only decent pint of it was in the Wheatsheaf on the corner of School Lane in Standish (where Aldi is now). The Brewery stood directly behind it on the remainder of the Aldi site. The same pint in the Cherry Gardens tasted like it had been pumped up straight from the River Douglas !!!
