I think I recall the one on Wallgate. Was it opposite the Post Office and did it later become The Wallgate Restaurant?
You are correct, Irene. It was opposite the GPO in Wallgate. I used to go in there for a toasted tea cake and cup of tea when I was at the Tech doing my course on ONC in mechanical engineering in the 1950's. Yummy! What memories.
Had my first ever cup of cappuccino there and with a saucer. Posh.
Jack, I used to have a book about New Brighton and it showed a 1950s café advertising fish and chips with bread "cut corner-to-corner". Posh, eh?! It really tickled me, did that!
Indeed Irene but I prefer them cut in half. They make a better butty.
The one on Greenhouse Street was extremely popular with Wigan Rugby fans. Me and my dad used to call in for a hot Vimto or Bovril as we walked home to Whelley after the match.
I remember well Lewis's in Greehough St with the distinctive greeny blue cladding (tiles?) on the shop front! It stood out amongst the other shops and houses. Lovely ice-cream too- called for one on the way to walking along the Douglas in the Summer months.
