Progress eh?

Nowadays, I have to put up with inferior bread!

(unless I bake my own.)

Comment by: Derrick Cunliffe on 9th January 2017 at 17:14

Yes I remember these JT Harvey vans delivering bread around
Hindley in the 1950s I new a few of the drivers as well D.C

Comment by: jack on 9th January 2017 at 17:26

Harvey's had new bakery built in Cale lane mid fifties next to Lowthers who made Eccles cakes.

Comment by: Garry on 9th January 2017 at 20:27

They were base in Ince Derick, Unigate milk had the depot later.

Comment by: Derrick Cunliffe on 9th January 2017 at 22:02

Comment by: Maurice. on 10th January 2017 at 00:27

I reckon most towns had a bakery,Hindley had the Excel bakery, and the back wall where the ovens must have been was always warm, beltin in Winter for kids,Warm Wall Back for the locals.

Comment by: Rev David Long on 10th January 2017 at 13:33

Someone, somewhere, has a fantastic set of photos of Harvey's vans etc from when they were in Ince. I saw them on display over ten years ago - I think they were part of an Age Concern 'Memories' display, but I didn't get the opportunity to ask if I could have copies of them. Hopefully they're still around, and haven't been cleared out in the meantime.... Maybe Ron could root them out?

Comment by: Rosie G on 10th January 2017 at 14:31

Why do so many people on here insist on being sarcastic at every opportunity? It really is so childish.

Comment by: irene roberts on 10th January 2017 at 20:41

I agree, Rosie G....I was surprised and annoyed by that earlier answer to Garry's comment. There was no need for that.

Comment by: Vb on 10th January 2017 at 21:51

Its not just sarcasm ladies it is downright hate filled tirades against one particular person and I think you know who I mean. I have been coming on this site right from the beginning about 10 years ago just to reminisce and print off photographs of old Scholes. Its been a bit more regular these days but I don't remember it being so bad and I am sure it must put people off. I don't know how the system works as to how some comments should be blocked. I really don't know how some get away with it.

Comment by: Jimmy, on 10th January 2017 at 23:16

DC,Garry didn't say ought about Manley St.

Comment by: Rosie G on 11th January 2017 at 09:48

You are right, VB this site has definitely deteriorated in the past year or two.Sarcasm and nastiness seem to rule.

Comment by: Jimmy. on 11th January 2017 at 10:42

As it says top of this Advert ( There is no reason ).Some folk should grow up.

Comment by: Garry on 11th January 2017 at 12:19

Thankyou to my real friends.

Comment by: Fred Foster on 11th January 2017 at 17:12

When the bakery in Cale Lane was new, we had a conducted tour round it. A friend of ours Joe Lowe, was the secretary at the bakery and lived in a house by the side of it. We were given blotters with the Harvey name on them and also a chrome tray which I still have. It was a really modern set up then. The firm moved there from Manley Street

Comment by: irene roberts on 11th January 2017 at 18:27

Garry, you and I haven't always agreed about photos, and when I've thought you were wrong, I have said so....and vice versa.....but we have "agreed to differ" and patched up our differences. But the comment you made on this photo was innocent and inoffensive and did not deserve the nasty comment it received. I may NOT always agree with you, Garry, and will say so if I don't, but I will back you to the hilt if I think someone has been nasty for no reason whatsoever, as in this case, and I know other fair-minded Wigan Worlders will do the same.

Comment by: baker on 11th January 2017 at 21:04

Irene your quite right

Comment by: Garry on 11th January 2017 at 21:07

AW thank you Irene. You know you're absolutely right what you say, I can be a stubborn bugger even if I may say it myself. Sometime If I believe I'm right about a subject I'll stick to it, I don't mean to be rude, in fact, I have the up most respect for you, the more I read your comment the stronger it gets. That goes for most people on Wigan World. I love banter and laughter this makes us all great friends, and when we all go on about one subject in particular, we bring the past to life.
Love you all x.

Comment by: Anne on 11th January 2017 at 21:10

irene we need the likes of gary on here, he makes me smile. well said .

Comment by: Vb on 11th January 2017 at 23:19

Garry you are going to have us all 'skriking' !

Comment by: . Ozymandias . on 11th January 2017 at 23:29

As it appears most of the comments seem to be directed against Derrick, I would just like to say a few words on his behalf. Not that he needs me to stick up for him, he's a big lad now. He's also a knowledgable lad, with close on 50 years experience as a wagon driver. Add to this the fact that he's a friendly outgoing chap who isn't in the least hateful. He may however have a tendency to ' shoot from the hip ' so to speak on occasions, a trait that I've often heard praised on here incidentally, and his reply to Garry, typical of Derrick, although it made me laugh, was obviously misinterpreted by many. But then again I have the advantage of knowing the man to a degree. Also, and if we're being fair, Garry has posted his share of rude comments on this site over the years, I don't believe anyone could deny that. Garry, I'm not taking sides here mate, in fact, you'd be more than welcome to come and have a pint with Derrick and me in The Balmoral, you'd soon discover that Derrick's bark is worse than his bite, and besides, it might just help to flush all that sherry you've been suppin, out of your system. Just give us the nod and you're on.

Regards. Ozy.

Comment by: alex on 12th January 2017 at 05:33

According to the women on here, garry cant do nothing wrong, but after saying that Osy, not only derrick as a do with him, others as well. Garry's the original straight guy I think, who say's what it really is.
At least you know where you stand with him.
Without the likes of garry ww won't be the same.

Comment by: Alan on 12th January 2017 at 05:45

Ozy looking back i can't see nothing wrong with Garry's comments only he appears to be quite correct with his comments over a wide range of topics.
The problem seems to be with the men on here, sometimes men and women see things differently.

Comment by: Garry on 12th January 2017 at 06:24

Ozy thanks for that, but I've no bad feelings with Derick on the contrary he's a very knowledgeable chap and his comments are straight to the point. But after saying that, isn't it good to clash over a post to who's right or wrong, it also brings in many people to share the post.
It's nice to agree but even better to disagree if you know your right. Tonight's a cold one, so when I've settled down in front of my roaring coal fire with my sherry, the toast is for all on Wigan World, friends for life, cheers X.

Comment by: Garry on 12th January 2017 at 06:35

Vb I hope your going to skrike with laughter and not sadness X.

Comment by: Vb on 12th January 2017 at 08:44

Strictly speaking my comment wasn't aimed at Derrick and I think you know that Garry. I look forward to 'skriking' with laughter - that's what it's all about!

Comment by: Pw on 12th January 2017 at 08:54

Derrick said he had seen these vans delivering around Hindley but knew they where based in Ince.Garry was only innocently telling Derrick they came from Ince.A misunderstanding I think.I do like read both of there comments and enjoy their banter.

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 12th January 2017 at 19:21

Can anyone Identify the make of this Van.

Comment by: Garry on 12th January 2017 at 21:58

Comment by: Rob on 13th January 2017 at 07:30

Don't know the make Colin, but the late Tommy Mitchel
the fish man from Hindley drove one, but his was like a pick-up type body.
I'll go with Garry, he's usually right.
