From the Programme for the Standish Bazaar of May 1911.
Does anyone know what is meant by 'The Best ORDINARY in Wigan' ?

Rev Long - an 'ordinary' was a meal (usually lunch) which was a set menu, at a set price.
Diners would usually get a cut or two off the joint, with accompanying vegetables etc.

I believe an "ordinary" was a set meal i.e. no menu choices.

When I worked in The Platt Bridge Inn in the 1970s I heard a lot of tales of Wigan's "Ladies of the Night" who frequented The Ship in the 1940s/50s.....one name that sticks in my mind is "Red Bette". Apparently, the Night Ladies used to chalk their prices on the soles of their shoes! It must have been quite a characteristic place in its time, and could certainly tell a few tales!

When will we see you in your 'Red Bette' outfit, Irene?
Thanks for explaining Ordinary, Mick & john.

Never say never, Rev. David! If I ever get a forties outfit in red, you just may see me, but I think I prefer to be "The LADY in Red" a la Chris de Burgh rather than the Red Bette of notoriety in The Ship!

The yachting club if I remember rightly.
