This store had a fire which destroyed it. Whilst it was being rebuilt, it was opened in the old Rushton`s warehouse in Newmarket St.
Entry in my diary Sun. 2nd August 1953:-
" Pendlebury`s shop on fire as we went past on bus at 10.35pm."
I remember shopping here one Xmas in the late sixties. I bought a tie for Dad for 9/11! In those days the price ticket was pinned to the item and written in pencil. When I got home I wrote a 1 in front of the 9/11, wrapping it up with the price tag on. Dad was most impressed I had spent "a few bob" on him!! lol
Used to love going in there because they had a lift, quite rare in Wigan in those days; also remember the lights they used to put up at the front of the shop at Christmas.
You little tinker, Giovanni! I worked there, (when it was Debenhams), 1973-1976.
I was always Xmas shopping at the store, Irene. You may have served me! And if so I would have mithered you for the staff discount! lol
Does my memory serve me right, wasn't there an attendant in the lift?
In the early-mid 1970s, Linda, there was still an attendant; unfortunately I can't recall her name, but I have stood in for her on breaks, and it was like on "Are You Being Served?" on the telly......you announced what was on each floor......"Carpets and Upholstery, Toys" etc.
My grandfather Dick Glover was a night watchman here.
