were were your brown family from?
Ask aunty nelly if you can look at her marriage certificate All the info will be on there
St Mary's Lower Ince - the Old Hall is visible on the far left.
Reverend. From the looks of the times when the photograph was taken, Mr Bryson would probably have been the vicar. He would also have his signature on the marriage certificate, or am I mistaken. I am almost sure, Mr Bryson was the vicar in the thirties, when I was in St Mary's Infant School.
Albert - Mr Bryson was Vicar from 1915 - 1944. I would also have put this wedding as pre-WW2 - but the only (Alice) Brown=(Peter) Banks Marriage in the Registers was in 1921 - and, by coincidence Ellen (=Nellie) Brown, Alice's elder sister, was a Witness.
The online Registers go to 1954, but there's still no Brown=Banks Marriage given.
As this South porch was used for wedding and Choir photographs, there are a few which show it in the background. Only one shows it with so much shrubbery in view - and that's from 1946. Most show it with no shrubs in those beds to the sides - but they date from the 1950s. As Sam Bryson is recorded as having undertaken quite a bit of planting in his time, I'd guess that no one dared clear any away until he was long gone.
My conclusion is, Brian, that this probably isn't Auntie Nellie's wedding.
An Edith Nellie Brown married a Fred Banks at St.Bartholemew, Westhoughton in 1940 if that is any help.
I think it may not be my aunt & Uncles wedding after all but I can see my mam & granddad & other family members on photo, the Brown family lived in the garage petrol station near greyhound track at Westhoughton at this time till late 1950s,my mam once told me that grandad tried to stand for Tory's when she was little witch didn't go down to well with her friends.
Sorry Brian but I can't resist. The only little Tory witch that I ever knew was Maggie Thatcher!
Brian - have a look through St Mary's Registers and see whether there's a relative whose wedding your family may have attended at St Mary's: http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Wigan/Ince/stmary/index.html
