My wife died recently and as I was goinng through some stuff, I found the invoice for our wedding ring Edna worked at Nimans and had the ring on approval. My wages at the time were £14/week as a shotfirer.

My wedding ring cost £6 from the jewellers in the Arcade. We were given three silver coffee spoons as a gift. As I developed arthritis I couldn't wear the ring so it was split to make two, one each for my daughter and my son's wife. When we were coming up to our Ruby anniversary him-in-doors took me to a posh shop in Manchester to get a replacement. As we were looking he explained to the assistant that as my first ring had cost £6 I could go to £10 for the replacement!Just before she beckoned security over, he said 'Only joking' No spoons that time around!

The initials at the top left hand side were of Barbara Crompton, I wonder if she is still alive? The owners of the shop were Bernard and Sally Cowen and they lived in Southport. My wife's first job when she started at 14 was to make the boiler fire each day.

Iam writing a book about the Jewish community of Wigan. The Nimans were one of the earliest Jewish families in thetown
Does anyone have any memories of any other families.Among the early families I have come across are the Sytners; the Franks;the Fishers ;By 1910 the synagogue on Bold st had closed but several Jewish owned businesses continued in the town .During the War.,Wigan was very welcoming to Jewish refugees and evacuees.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone with information
