I bet these beauties were still quicker that Gardener engines in the old lorries, and didn't smoke as much.

Garry they did smoke, and worse, an old workmate of mine had drove a steam lorry on a regular run from Preston to Liverpool and had 35 convictions for exceeding the 8 m p h speed limit and depositing ashes on the road Mostly at Rufford where the village bobby would chase after him on a bike

I can just about recall seeing a steam wagon delivering beer to the pub on the corner of Wellington Street and Scholes must have been very late 1940's early 1950's. It may have been a kind of promotion. Does anyone know when the went out of service completely?
