The Central Wireless used to run the relay radio system which was aimed at houses where there was no mains electricity. They put a speaker in the house and (I think) just three BBC stations were relayed from the shop in Standishgate. No idea what radius from the shop was covered. My dad knew the shop manager (Wilf?) and, to earn extra money, used to help him with another service they offered, which was taking an amplifier and records to wedding receptions and other functions. An early form of disco, I suppose!
Very interesting Derek
Derekb the shop manager was Wilf Hughes and the owner of the company John Tilley who lived at Kingsmede Wigan Lane.

extract from the London Gazette 1938, showing how Jack Tilley dissolved his partnership with a Standish woman. He carried on the business as sole trader as Central Wireless Company from then on. I worked for his as a TV Engineer in the mid 60's.
