Car prices had shot up a lot by 1979,I paid £1200 in 1973 for a brand new Renault12.
In 1968 the new model Viva Estate was £969, I got 10% discount.
Colin, I remember Timberlakes being in Wallgate, but they were originally in Library St.The showroom being in the building where Fisher's carpets were, and the workshop was in the building where Wallpaper Supplies is now.
I bought a Morris 1100 there in 1969.
Yes Tom, I remember Timberlakes on both sides of the street, (BLMC) British Leyland Motor Company. It's sad they are no more, they couldn't compete with the foreign car makers that started to appear in the 70s.
Correction to my last comment.
In 1966 (BMC) British Motor Corporation changed it's name to (BMH) British Motor Holdings, in 1968, with further mergers and under pressure from the Labour Government (BMH) merged and renamed to (LMC) Leyland Motor Corporation. Later (LMC) was to form (BLMC) British Leyland Motor Corporation. In 1975, (BLMC) was nationalised and renamed British Leyland. The rest is history.
