Where did you get these adverts from Ken? They are really interesting.

My brother remembers a chemist's shop, not sure what street it was, & the chemist painted pictures as a hobby, he used to put some in the shop window. This would be back in the 1940's. Anyone know if it might be this shop ?

Hi Catherine if you like to look at old ads of Wigan Shops. If you go Stuff then on the left scroll down until you come to WIGAN VIEWS and OLD WIGAN BROUGH GUIDE you will see plenty more.

These ads come from a book published in 1914 called Wigan Town and Country Rambles By John T Hilton

Thanks Ron. I had a look at those old photos. Really interesting. I loved that the barber shop also sold umbrellas.

Catherine, until quite recent times in the Wigan area many barbers used to mend umbrellas, does anybody know how this became a secondary occupation for them?

My father was a barber in Blackrod for many years and at the quite times of the day he used to repair umbrellers I used to go Manchester with my mother to get spare parts covers etc I still have many of the bits of umbrellers at home including handles but no covers.

My great grandad Joseph Chalder Turpin was the manger of this shop in 1914.
