My uncle Joe mayor of Wigan laying the corner stone for the new swimming baths in Library Street in I think 1966. This stone has recently been removed during demolition of the baths.

And it looks like Albert Tatlock (ex Coronation St) is looking on.

I vaguely remember being there with my Grandparents, Jack & Margarate Cockrell. My grandfather had been the Baths Manager there for over 30 Years until his retirement a Year or so before when the Old Vaths was closed for partial demolition (they kept the two old former pools re-lining the tanks and building the new building around them in parallel with the building of the new pool. This photo is taken at what was the bottom rt hand corner of the new building,in the background is what was then the Reference Library, now the Heritage Centre

The Heritage Service has been working with the architects and building contractors to incorporate the foundation stone into the design of the new Life Centre. I am please to announce that the foundation stone has been incorporated into landscaping at the south end of the site (near the entrance to the old International Pool).
