lovly photo eric, but i cant make out where on walthew lane it is, it looks like warrington rd to me neville st to left and the big house is where andys chippy is now, right from the man would be webster st ,but i may be wrong?

You're spot on with Neville St, the chippy and Webster St. , Josie, but they are off Walthew Lane, not Warrington Road. Warrington Road becomes Walthew Lane at the railway brige by Moss Lane cricket pitch, then goes back to being Warrington Road either at the King Billy or the Post Office.

I reckon you're spot-on with the location, Josie.

Great pic, I used to live in Walthew Lane when I fist got wed in the mid 80's (approx where the bus is in the distance) Wish those cobbled streets were left as they were!

Briliant photo's Eric. Just look at the cobbled road you can just make out the cats-eyes. However did we manage without all the painted road markings we have today!! It really is good to see all these old pics Eric.

Hi,
Walthew lane ended near the bank which was near the Post Office, on the corner of Platt st.

Iremember a car crashing into the bank I think it got wedged in the doorway.

Hi Russ... I remember you living in that house. I agree regards the cobbled streets, but could we have a tarmac strip for us cyclist? ;-)

But cobbles do see to take less looking after, we have a cobbled street near us, no pot holes after the recent snow, never any road works going on to fix it... it just last and last.

But, not good for a bloke on a bike.

Oh, I don't know, Dennis.....I can recall us kids deliberately riding down sloping George Street in Ince on our bikes or home-made trolleys, going " Aaaaahhhhhh", just so our voices would shake as we bumped over the cobbles! Weren't we easily pleased in those days?!

Me too Irene, but at 52 the old body can't take it now. :-D

I remember whizzng down Tram Street on a homemade cart (really good pram wheels it had) and trying to get the wheels into the tram lines lol

I was brought up in Sydney Street all the nearby Streets were cobbled or setts, the streets were lit by gas lamps one can be seen on Neville St in the photo I remember at least three Methodist Chapels in Platt Bridge,Independant, Primitive,Wesleyan, probably all gone now.

I live across from what was Andys chippy, it's great to see a photo of how it used to look!

Hi Roland, the car you were talking about, cleared the doorway of the national westminster bank, by just over an inch on either side, and ended up in the manager's office. The police who were at the scene couldn't under stand how he made through the solid counter.

Anyone know the first name of Mr Dawber featured?

Comment by: ArthurP on 15th March 2020 at 16:04

StuartP, I know this is a bit late, but I've only just seen your question. Mr Dawber was Bert Dawber - he had two sons, Leonard and Neville, they lived in Stanley Road in Platt Bridge
