The Charabanque, My old boss, James Eckersley, Hindley, used to tell me of his early days as a haulage contractor in the 1920's. He had a "T" model Ford lorry and on Saturday afternoon he took the flat lorry body off and replaced it with a CHARABANG body to carry passengers on Sunday to local places of interest, one of which was to go over the Ship Canal at Warburton Bridge. Then he had to clean out the "Chara" and put the lorry body back on ready for Monday morning. E.T.
What a wonderful photo, note the obligatory heather at the windscreen & the big bunch the 2 ladies in the back have...when we went for ' Sunday Rides ' we always got some heather to stick in the car radiator grill...obviously a practice frowned on now, not PC. Wonder where the pic was taken, a beauty spot somewhere...were the people from the pony & trap pinching heather as well ?!
photo belonged to a deceiced relatives father who was local.I wonder how much wild heather grew around wigan once.
