Outside of the old town hall prior to the tour of the town, showing off the R.L. Cup. I was there I can remember going straight from school.

This photograph in 1958 is in Rodney Street outside the old town hall. The coach has a Yorkshire registration, and in front of the Wigan Corporation bus is the Horseshoe pub that was demolished in 1985 to make way for the ring road.

Great photo.Full of character.
I'm wondering what the players are stood on though as its only a single decker open top bus?

I can see that the sergeant is holding his swagger stick, the customary item the sergeants’, and inspectors’ used, by knocking the metal end on the pavement to summon the attention of the beat officer.

You wouldn't get so many people watching Wigan touring with a cup today.

Thanks Mr X - I was lost until you described the Horseshoe pub. The coach is in front of what I remember as the Mayor's Parlour, I think. Another small vista of Wigan from another rare angle.

Is that Norman Cherrington big lad stood at front

The coach was on its second life in the service of local firm Unsworths. It was rebodied by Yeates of Scarborough in 1953 on a pre-war Leyland Tiger TS7 chassis.

In 1950 there was a church, or a Christian assembly hall, on the left of the shown photograph, I remember going there, in 1950, something to do with a youth club that they ran.

Albert the building in question still has a date plaque on the wall, with the inscription 'Christian Meeting House 1858'

Thank you Mick LD. You are full of solutions

The Wigan Corporation bus, with the rear winding stairs, to the upper deck.

Comment by: Veronics on 13th October 2019 at 17:59

Open at the back bus, with the pole to swing on if you were a few seconds late. ( Not that I did, but you would often see young lads jumping on)

if this is rodney st?,where is king st & libary st,from here & which st have buses come from if the destination board on the rear says going to wigan,& was'nt the old police station at the back of the town hall.

Comment by: Veronica on 13th October 2019 at 22:06

The buses are coming from down Library St ( same as they do now). King St is behind the photographer.

Comment by: Terry on 13th October 2019 at 22:06

GP this photo is looking into Rodney street from the junction with King St.
The corporation bus has just come out of Library street.

Comment by: Kathleen on 14th October 2019 at 07:54

The police station entrance was on the corner of King Street and Rodney Street.

Comment by: Albert.S. on 14th October 2019 at 09:20

Kathleen. The entrance to the police station was a little further along King Street, towards Darlington Street. The entrance door on the corner led into thr Town Hal
