When browsing through some old photos, I came across this old photo of Latics team before the F.A.Cup 1st Rd at Southport in 1957. I went to this match when I was 14 and can't recall that Roy Smith (centre forward) didn't play. I am assuming that the player in the centre on the front row replaced him? I know all the other players,as they played in the previous round (4th Qual.)at Chorley
Any older Tics help me out? Jeff?

Nice picture Ivor, went to the match myself I was 12 went with my school mates. I remember Jack Arkwright poleaxing Stan Mortensen out of the game. I think the player could have been Peter Higham. Some good players in that side.

Perhaps B Banks or Ted Buckle is the player with the ball at his feet Ivor; they were the Latics's goalscorers on that day.

Thanks for replies, but Peter Higham (who I really liked when he was with Latics) was with us in 59-60 and 61-62 seasons, when I vividly recall, he scored with 2 very memorable overhead kicks!
Bernard Banks is 2nd left front row and Ted Buckle is far right on front row.

Who won it?

Going of the team that day - I would say
Back - Forsyth, Rowland, Arkwright, Bramwell, Whyte, Hitchen
Front - Harrison, B.Banks, McLaren, Prescott, Buckle
Attendance was 14,270

Even nicer to whizz through them when they're identified. Continued thanks.

Tom - You could be right over Hitchen and Forsyth - it was a guess from me - a lot of them look similar with them haircuts.
