Another photo of the flamboyant personality "Attie" Van Heerden. Here he's handing off a Hull player during the Championship semi-final played at Central Park on 24 April 1926. Van Heerden scored one of Wigan's 5 tries in a 34 - 0 victory and went on to win the Championship on May 8th against Warrington, where Van Heerden scored again in a 22 - 10 victory.

Attie Van Heerden had a brother (N. Van Heerden) who played just 4 games for Wigan before "disappearing from the scene". I believe he may have stayed in this country.

His brother was Nicholas Van Heerden, he went on to play for York.

Prominent in the background is "Hill Cottage" (still exists) - when this photo was taken it had been just 8 months since the passing of the man mainly responsible for the building of Central Park, John Harrison Prescott, a club Director and a prominent Councillor for St Andrew's Ward who lived there.
He also had a son and two grandsons who played for the club. This is from his Obituary in the Wigan Observer 22nd Aug., 1925.
John Harrison Prescott 1847 - 1925
"Formerly Mr Prescott reside at Hill cottage, Wigan, and during this period he took a prominent part in Rugby League work. He was a member of the committee and director of Wigan Rugby club for 20 years or more and he laid out the present ground at Central Park, the work being done by local labour under his personal supervision. His son, Mr Elijah prescott played for some time as a forward with the Wigan Club and of which his two grandsons, John Prescott and Frank Prescott also became playing members"
