I've recently heard of an "eight pack" as opposed to a "six pack", this guy looks as if he started it. 9 stone in weight, 8.75 stone of which is pure muscle I'm sure. Very impressive.
He is certainly no nine stone weakling- it must be due to his mam's home cooking!
Thanks to Philip Gormley for the info.
I’ve found a piece on wrestler Jack Brown. Some fella at KarlStern.com, mentions that your grappler became licensee of a pub in Newtown, and that after winning The Andrew Challenge Cup in 1914, displayed it in his hotel. Stern gave his source as being L.E.P. 28/3/51.
Jack Brown won this trophy by beating fellow Wiganer Jimmie Scicily at Audenshaw, in 1914. Thanks Ron.
Anyone know which pub in newtown he had
Jack Brown was a friend of my father in law and the pub, was known as Jack Brown's and also Black Bull, according to my husband.
They also held clogs fighting at the back of the pub.
Rubyshoes: I've read that one of the last purrin contests took place at the rear of The Millstone Inn in 1912 - Ron's Item #:4276 shows the likely venue -, but I remember being told once that purrin had been witnessed, and presumably later than 1912, at the front of The Simms Road Inn in Garswood. Ouch!
Thanks can you tell me where the pub was in newtown was it on the other side to the saddle pub on ormskirk rd,did jack have a daughter maggie .
Why is a wrestling ring square?
Loking for info on John'Ajax'Robinson.
My Grandfather
Maggie was his daughter in law, married to his son Jackie Brown. Jack (the wrestler) brother Harry ran the off license at the corner of Ormskirk Road and Scot Lane. Later, Harry's son, also Harry, ran the off License, until it was demolished and now part of the Aldi car park.
The Black Bull, also demolished for the Newtown fire station. The cup in the picture was later sold to Silcocks and was the cup played for in the rugby league sevens competition.
