Is that les bolton front row far right

Comment by: Mick on 20th April 2016 at 20:21

Wondered if it was John, Jarvo.
A distinct family resemblance between him, his little brother Joe, and their Dad.

Yes it is Les who alas has not been well for a long time. An old schoolchum of mine along with Ray "sol" Holland second row back on the right. Had the bad luck to play against John Lydons John Rigby team several times only to be battered every time. Difficult to know why Billy Lyon is not on this photo as he would have been about seventeen at this time. Was the age limit below this ?

Apologies in my post above i should have said 3rd from right in the seated row. Old Age creeping up!

Comment by: John Murphy on 21st April 2016 at 14:32

re Bill Lyon - I played for this colts side for two years and I don't recollect Bill ever playing Colts rugby.

Comment by: Alan Wright on 21st April 2016 at 17:17

John, wasn't my old mate Pete Phillips playing for the colts that year?

Comment by: John Murphy on 21st April 2016 at 19:05

As with Bill Lyon. Peter was not a colt. He played for John Rigby and then went off to university.

Comment by: Johnny on 21st April 2016 at 20:50

I knew Billy Lyon from 1966 and he was in the first XV then! A great player and Wigan Rugby League tried unsuccessfully to get him to swap codes!

Four St. Cuthberts boys in that team. Lydon, May twins and Moss. I was talking to Gaskell last week and saw poor Bolton the other day. What an era for talent.

Comment by: jathbee. on 22nd April 2016 at 00:32

Second row, third left. Eddie Right?

Comment by: dannyboy1948 on 22nd April 2016 at 08:22

Jathbee would that be Norman Gaskell ? If yes yet another schoolmate from St, Johns primary along with Sol Les Barry Stevens etc.

Comment by: John Murphy on 22nd April 2016 at 16:58

Not sure about Billy Lyon being in the first team in '66 - could have been one of his brothers/cousins. Eric Lyon, played wing forward was around the club at that time. Re the St Cuthberts lads. Put me down as number five, although I was in the year below the others.

Comment by: Jathbe on 23rd April 2016 at 00:09

Yes that is Norman Gaskell, brother of Frank.

Comment by: Roy on 23rd April 2016 at 00:54

John, i think you are correct re Eric Lyon.

Comment by: tommy on 26th April 2016 at 23:33

Comment by: Peter Phillips on 15th January 2017 at 19:29

Are you sure this is 67/68 John? I think it is the 66/67 team as I played in the 67/68 team . I also played for St John Rigby against this Colts team in a 9 all draw.f
