Looks like Cec Mountford there.
Surely that's Warrington? Can't think of any other teams of that era with two tone hoops.
wild guess but could that be a younger looking Brian Bevan?
Didn't Huddersfield play in hoops at that time?
Looking at the records my guess is 16th April 1951, Wigan 19 Warrington 2. I agree that's Bevan, chased by Mountford with Hilton and possibly Blan in the background.
Keith's quite the Cherry-and-White anorak!! lol
Another fine photo by Tom Gerrard, capturing not only the flavour of the match but also I believe the white "cottage" in the background known as Hill Cottage the old home of Wigan Director John Prescott largely responsible for the existence of Central Park.
Keith,s right as usual all I can add is Ashcrofts Wood yard is in the background
This goes back to the times when the home team changed jerseys if they clashed with the away team. This is the awful chocolate and brown strip that Wigan had in the early 50's. I think they only had it for one season because they lost more games than they won when wearing it.
@Ron - Huddersfield had a different pattern to their hoops - claret with quite narrow gold hoops, not evenly spaced like these
Color on my previous comment should have been chocolate and blue. Another senior moment!
Chocolate and brown? Wigan are clearly in their cherry and red strip, with Wire in primrose and blue.
100% correct Jarvo.
Definitely Ces and WIGAN v Huddersfield.
Did Tom Gerrard live on Hall lane Hindley ,just past the toll gate on the left in the 1970's?
Hi Bill F, I may be wrong but I thought Tom Gerrard lived in Walmesley Street, just off Warrington Road, leading to Darlington Street East.
Ken maybe you are correct,I remember going into a house on Hall Lane,Hindley many years ago and I seemed to remember that man of the house was named Gerrard. He had a fabulous collection of films and photos of local life, including films of Billy Boston.I often wondered what became of them.
I defer to your experience Bill F, the story you tell sounds right.
Don't think this is central park, central park had a dutch barn on the spion cop end, this photo doesn't show the barn. Also to the right of the spion cop end, it doesn't look anything like that end of the groung. Could be the away teams ground.
Accky, without a shadow of a doubt this is Central Park, Wigan - the Dutch barn you refer to is out of the photo to the left, it ran parallel with the Douglas side of the ground part of which can be seen in this photo on the right. I saw my first match here 5 years before this photo was taken at the ground.
Yes that's Brian Bevan, a unique winger .Just glad I saw him play
