Jimmy Scoular, Bob Stokoe and Milburn - all England internationals. A creditable draw for the Latics!

Comment by: Bob on 16th December 2014 at 08:48

From my recollection, didn't Newcastle equalise late on in the match to deny Wigan a deserved win?

Comment by: mick east on 16th December 2014 at 23:29

according to my sources ,all those internationals played off the park by wigan's own centre half mycock.

Not quite Bob.
Newcastle scored in the first half, but Latics equalised 7 minutes into the second half. After 75 minutes Latics went ahead (from a move of all the Ls - Lindsay to Livesey to Lomax to Lyon). Newcastle however equalised almost immediately with a solo run by Jackie Milburn.

Latics had a goal disallowed late on, and another one disallowed in the replay. Nothing changes where big clubs play little ones.

Springfield Park was being redeveloped after a fire and Newcastle very unsportingly complained about the facilities.

Newcastle's starting 11 included 6 full internationals, and they dominated the first half but only led 1-0 at the break (Broadis). Jackie Lyon restored parity eight minutes after the restart and Jimmy Livesey fired Latics into an unlikely lead 14 minutes from time. Milburn levelled within seconds but the Lancastrians would have been celebrating a famous
3-2 win on Tyneside had a linesman not intervened and ruled Tommy Hindle's late goal offside.

Goalkeeper Ronnie Simpson was to win the European Cup with Celtic in 1967.

Left Half Bob Stokoe was to win the FA Cup with Sunderland as Manager in 1973, just after Latics made their first unsuccessful appearance a Wembley

I was at Thomas Linacre School at the time and clearly remember it was snowing on the day of the replay and us schoolboys were throwing snowballs at the Newcastle supporters (we must have been the original football yobbos) as they walked past the school and down Park Rd. What i DO remember is seeing an official photo(newspaper photographer possibly LEPost) taken during the game of Ronnie Simpson stood on his line holding the the ball behind his head and clearly over the line.

just been told billy Lomax was an ex paratrooper who dropped at Arnhem! Don't know what today's lot would make of that!

I have newspaper clippings from the first game and replay of this FA cup round as my Grandad was Wigan Athletic centre half, David Mycock. I also have Lancashire Combination league winners trophies that are sitting in the bottom of my wardrobe. Thy need to be on display somewhere

Tom Hindle was my father. He talked so fondly of his time playing for Wigan Athletic. If the club, or anyone, has any footage or newspaper photos of him playing at Wigan my sister and I would love to see them. He was a brilliant Dad and we were so proud of him. Sadly he passed away in August 2011, aged 90 years.
