From what I can gather this is the Wigan Corporation Team of Painters taken in the mid 1930’s.
My Grandfather Charles Swift was a painter and decorator by trade is seated on the back row RH side.
What the significance of the large Bovril jars is I don’t know, perhaps just a bit of fun.

I remember the council painters of the early sixties. Some of them wore army berets, obviously from their time doing NS. There were some right characters, but they were all excellent tradesmen. One young bloke was the spit of George Best. He ended up painting our kitchen as a foreigner. Did a brilliant job. Happy days in Pem.
