Great image. I would guess that man was not born into well, but achieved it. He has a toned body suggestive of hard graft. He doesn't have the hands of a drawing room gentleman. Does anyone know the couple's history?

jj,: I think I agree with your comments relating to the gents wealth, he does appear to have been a hard worker, his hands and face look weathered and full of life's grind for the times. The other photo also shows some eye problems on the right eye, looks like he's worked hard and come good his walking stick is probably from Hawthorn tree I'll stick my neck out and say he looks working class, may be a foreman or a boss in the pits or cotton mills maybe.
