He was on a brief visit to Wigan on Thursday 18th of April 1996, the town where he attended Dicconson Street Primary School and Wigan Grammar School.
Great to see a photo of Bob and his Boxer dog, I can imagine Sir Ian being enthralled as Bob was a great character and could tell a good tale or two. I'd often see him when walking our dog at Marylebone Park, he'd light a cigarette and puff away, though never inhaling the smoke, perhaps the reason why he lived to such a grand age.
I am dissapointed in him to be honest. When he was on 'Who Do Think You Are' he mentioned being born in Burnley then jumped to Bolton. There was no mention of Wigan at all. Despite spending over 11 years in Wigan and only seven in Bolton he still considers Bolton his home town.
GT. Sir Ian comes back to Wigan often when he is invited. Recently to the old Magestrate's Court theatre. I suspect however edited the programme left out any mention of Wigan. A great Photo.
I agree with Maggie; the editors of the programme have to fit it into a time-slot and edit the contents to fit; Sir Ian would have had no say in the end product. He was here for the Wigan Pride March not long ago and he seems to have a soft spot for Wigan.
I agree with Irene and Maggie. I have seen other interviews with Sir Ian when he has quite pointedly mentioned his time living in Wigan, notably being enthralled by the returning actors from the Wigan Hippodrome to their nearby digs in Bridgeman Terrace.
As children we would play on the Cricket Field at the back of our houses. The last time I saw him was at the opening of the rose garden in Mesnes Park. Many memories
