I think this is one of my Grandfathers brothers. Taken around Wigan about 1910-1920. I have included it because the way he is sitting reveals the sole's of his Clogs and the irons attached to them.

You don't see clogs like that today, pointed toed Pit Clogs, with clasp fasteners..

Up to the age of 9, I like the other kids, wore clogs on weekdays. Girls' clog had leather strips, while the boys had irons. I was envious of the boys, because they could "spark" their clogs, while girls couldn't. remember the song about Lowry? "Kids with their sparking clogs"?

I was born in Hindley in 1946 and both my sister and I wore clogs yep we had irons on the heals.
