John was a director and chairman of Wigan Rugby League Football Club and a significant Rugby Football legislator for many years. Between 1898 and 1938 he kept a diary with ‘meticulous care’. They provide many intriguing insights into the history of Wigan and Rugby Leagues history in general. There are many examples, here are a few more "light hearted" ones……
27 March 1908: ‘Made sandwiches at home for Wigan team travelling to London.’
9 September 1931: With other directors ‘went round the Wigan district to find private posting board places to advertise matches.’ and….. In the early years, facilities left much to be desired. "The landlord of the Princess of Wales, our headquarters, being dead in the house, the players dressed for training at the White Horse Hotel".
They come from an article published in 2002, Issue 32 of "Past Forward"

John Counsell was my late husbands grandfather. I still have acopy of his diary serialised in the Wigan Observer. Sadly the original was destroyed in the fire at the club
