Canned Heat in Wigan, I was there and of all the rock nights there I think this was the best.
Have you any more photos Andrew.?

Comment by: Andrew Lomax on 26th February 2009 at 17:11

Yes I have, I just cannot identify many of the bands as the pictures came from another source.

Leave your email address and I'll email the lot over.

Cheers.

Andrew
What year was this? Dont know how I missed the gig.I've always been a Canned Heat fan.Bob"The Bear"Hite and Alan"Blind Owl" Wilson, great music. It's pity that Bob died in 1981.

I'm seeing a friend of mine later who owns these photographs, I'll get everything you need to know :-)

Canned Heat played the casino about 1975 or 76.

Comment by: Andrew Lomax on 27th February 2009 at 15:20

All pictures during the period of 74-76. Other photographs show Tony McPhee and Judas Priest to name but a few. I'm in the process of getting an actual list of bands.

I can remember watching , Judas Priest,
Scorpions, Iron Maiden ( Wigan Tech doo)
Hustler a rock and Roll band from the east end of London
Fripp, Andy Frazer band
Bebop delux
UFO
Slade
Sutherland Bros and Quiver
Stranglers
Great nights 8-12 every Saturday before the alnighter, all for a couple of quid.
What will it cost to watch them now???
I used to know the girl who booked the bands , through the A1 agency, so was always informed of the groups in advance.
Does anyone know anyone who could get drunk on the beer they served in there. I tried on many occasions but failed, maybe too much beer in the water then!

Wasn't Stan Webb guesting on guitar that night?

Comment by: Andrew Lomax on 12th February 2012 at 23:46

Yes quite correct! My friend told me of his shock when Stan appeared.

id been in touch with bassist richard hite and he rang me up and told me they were playing wigan casino so me and my friends john billy and frank got backstage to meet the band for the first time.stan webb was there too but as i was a huge canned heat fan i took photos of them alone and had them sign my album sleeves.i remember as we left all the northern soul fans were streaming in as bob hite queued up at a hot dog stand as we flagged down a cab and pooled our remaining money to make it back to liverpool....we were all very young and it had been a a memorable night for all of us.

I am the John that Terry refers to. I remember CH did an excellent slot. When we were backstage Stan Webb from Chicken Shack kept going on about Biggles (fictional pilot) and the authors links with Wigan. Also remember speaking to Richard Hite and he couldn't understand a word of my Liverpool accent but they were good blokes

Thanks so much for this memory. I had completely forgot ( to my shame or maybe it was the drugs, lol)that I had seen Canned Heat at the Casino. Always good bands there. Steve Gibbons also appeared at Wigan Pier years later.Excellent nights at the casino. How many of you used to go to the rock night in the Bier Keller too?

Comment by: Johnny Peters on 20th May 2014 at 07:21

Hi Mary
I remember rock nights at the Bier Kellar. When it first opened (it was the old coffee bar)they had a german ooompah band in residence. No wonder the ale tasted funny. I recall it was Lowenbrau. Happy days ;-)
