Fished in the lake as a lad 6 old pence[a tanner] for the season the council in their wisdom filled it in with all the refuse from the bins. Look at the state of it now.

Used to go newting in the lake as a young boy. Then the council filled it in, perhaps that's why they are now an endangered species. (Or little boys newting!!)

Ashton U D C certainly loved filling in lakes, they did the same with the Skitters.
