It was situated in Hardybutts on the corner with Warrington Lane.
I used to hate walking past that place
I remember walking past on my own, as a youngster, in the early fifties and saw two bedraggled children, no more than 10 years of age, shoeless and crying as if they'd been locked out. It filled me with an equal share of puzzlement and dread.
A little bit like the Marshalsea from 'Little Doritt' but they didn't lock you in eh.
in summer the window on the right hand side(with the net curtains)used to be open, there was always a fire in the hearth, and when you walked past you was treated to:-well it is hard to describe the aroma that came through that window!
My auntie and uncle used to have a grocer's shop opposite. Pomfrets, and I used to see some of the men who lived here, they would come into the shop and buy one egg. Some of them were scary but some looked just like anyone's grandad, they had just fallen on hard times, so sad.
WHEN WE WERE KIDS WALKING HOME FROM WIGAN WE USED TO PEG EACH OTHER UP TO LOOK AT ALL THE OLD TRAMPS,THEY WERE DEAD SCARY TO LOOK AT .IF ANY OF THEM SHOUTED AT US WE WOULD NOT STOP RUNNING UNTIL WE REACHED PLATT BRIDGE PALACE,
