This is the box from the Poolstock Post Office I inquired about. It has been restored by a friend who is a member of the Letter Box Study Group. It originally had a Victorian enamel plate as in the photo but when it was taken out of service when the PO closed it had a GR plate which some of you may remember.

It dosent look like an original post box to me with them exposed cupboard door hinges.
RE previous comment, the reason it has those hinges is it was designed cheaply to be built into old fashioned shop windows like the old post offices had. In those days in the late 1800s, we didn't have people vandalising post boxes and breaking windows etc. so they were perfectly safe. Also, if you have ever tried to cut one of them hinges, you would know how tough they actually are. The wooden box would break first and you would have had your collar felt by a 'proper' police force and not the 'service' we have today!
