Taken from Miles Lane bridge over the M6 looking south - you can just make out the top of the viaduct over the Douglas Valley at Gathurst.

8 years later, November '69, it was christened "Death valley".
Where that pic was taken from, cops were throwing traffic cones at cars going south into the fog, trying to slow 'em down, while we were working trying to extricate injured (and bodies) from the carnage....Yeah, It does bring back memories. :o(

My memories where from when it was a golf course and them big Euclid coming and slicing up the clay as through it was butter.
But I do also remember what Art is saying I could here them crashing as I walked up gathurst lane after coming back from Wigan Fire station where me and a mate who where members of the AFS where standing by because of bonfire night strangely we didnt get any call outs at all but then after we left like Art was saying it all started on the M6

I've not heard about that Art. Sounds horrendous.

I worked in the site office of McAlpines when they were building the M6 1962 and met my husband there.

Was a very samll child when this was built, remember visiting relatives in Shevington and being taken down to the bottom of their garden to see the motorway.
