Central Park in the early years. The advertising on the stand to the left reads "Wear a Swallow Raincoat" and "P.A. Kinley Ltd., King Street, Wigan" - could help with dating.

The photo is of a Wigan v St.Helens match at central park on the 7th of April 1950.Wigan won 17 to 12 with tries by Mountford,Nordgren and W.Blan, goals by Ryan.Hope that helps!

Those names bring back memories, with others like Mountford,
Alty and Ward - to name a few.
I used to go with my Dad to almost every match.

I remember being on that match as a "lad". I was told that there were almost 50,000 people crammed in - seems a lot.

Hi Peter ...you have the wrong match mate....The record crowd of 48,000 was against St Helens on Good Friday 1959!

Joseph.
The 7th April 1950 Wigan v St Helens game played at Central Park had an official attendance of 41,323, and looking at the empty spaces on the spion cop end I don't think 41,000 were present for this game. Also the game you mentioned had 4 goals kicked by Ken Gee for Wigan with tries by Nordgren, Mountford, and Blan. Ryan did not play in that game.

Sat afternoons in the Hen Pen with a large cherry and white rattle, those were the good days of rugby, sadly now a car park.Come back Central Park {if only}.

Looking again at this old central park photo, I would suggest that Wigan are not playing St Helens. The empty spaces that I have already mentioned plus the fact that not many are sat on the ring side seats round the edge of the playing area makes me think this is not Wigan v Saints fixture. Also of the few players visable the opponents seem to be wearing a dark shirt, which Saints didn't play in those days.So all in all I don't think this is a Wigan V Saints fixture.
