View of top end of Hindley Deep Pit taken from on the slag heap. Summer 1978. Much camping and fishing and swimming was done here and my brother and his mate swear that they found a deep spot towards the bottom end where they let down a weight on a string which never reached bottom.

To the left of the picture was the popular end. It was like sand and the slope into the water was gradual.
At the other end it was all brickbats and was deep after a couple of strides.
It was like Southport beach in summer.

I remember a young man drowning in there and they had to use dredging equipment to find his body.

In the winter 1962/63 it was completely frozen over and the ice was really thick .

I was born in darby lane in 1952 and was always playing around the deep pit.One day when me and a mate were wading out he disappeared under the water.for the life of me i cannot think of his name or if he was ever found.i do remember my grand dad watching cock fighting on the rucks close by and he clouted me and sent me home.
