Weren't those doors in the outside toilets where they used to empty the old midden buckets I seem to remember we had a similar one in Ince. The lorries had a couple of sliding doors which went over the top like a bread bin, into which the buckets were emptied, not really happy memories but at the time neccessary
So would that be taken on the football field, can't remember what it was called, but later known as Jolly Jacks pitch?
Does anyone remember a guy called Bernard Lillis who lived on Lily Lane?
Hi aitch
The doors were midden doors but not for toilets. They were for ashes and rubbish before dustbins were issued.
They were emptied by a man going inside with a spade and digging it out. They would be full by the time they were ready to be emptied. The smell was awfull.
It must have been a terrible job.
I asked my dad if they were they ever used as toilet middens
but he said they were not while we lived there.

Hi Phil
Jolly Jacks was at the other side of Bolton road on crippins lane faceing the fronts of these houses to the right of the photo.
The football pitch I think you mean is across Bolton road to the left of the photo faceing the fronts of these houses.
The year was 1951 not 55.

I think these are where the new houses are currently being built (Mar 08), next to the Bryn Hall pub.
Bernard use to live over bridge going towards the canal from Bryn Gates, now lives at the top of Swell Brew going out of Abram towards Golbourn
Derek you are probably standing behind Heskeths paper shop and Clarks house
Hi neil
yes these were the houses where the new houses are being built now they were 614 to 628 I lived at 620
D
Hi Mark
Heskeths shop is just out of shot to the right on Lilly Lane.Clarkes lived at the end of the row to the right, out of shot.
The midden door that is shut would belong to Bishops shop on Bolton Road which would have been No 626.
Bishops made pies on I think Wednesdays only, they were the best pies on the planet.

Derek, you are correct regarding the middin door, the petty doors were located at either side of the middin door at a lower level, you can just make out the brick work of these doors if you look closely
Hi woodentop
yes I can see them.
They must have been pettys at some time.

Hi, Bernard Lillis is my Uncle and is still fighting fit. He now lives at Balmers Farm on the way to Golbourne.
.....and he's my uncle 2. Hi Ged. I'mm looking for clues to my dads side of the family at the mo.
All my mums family(Pugh) lived in 1st and 2nd street-does anyone remember them?
The only Pughs I remember was Elsie & her Mam (Annie I think). Elsie was married to Jack Morrison & they later moved to 112 Grange Road at Bryn
Couple of corrections to the comments. The row of houses was 614 to 630. If I'm seeing the photo correctly, the back gate immediately to the right of the little lads head is to Bishops Shop, which was 626. Then came Wynnes at 628, and Winstanleys at 630.The little lad is standing where there used to be a WW2 air raid shelter. In later years, when this photo was taken, people used to hang their washing there...
I use to live in an old house in lilly street, stubshawcross. I would love to see any photos of this street.
This photo is taken behind Bishop's shop on Bolton Road.Moving to the right of the picture you can see a change in the roof line. That is where the entry was which separated Bolton Road from Lily Lane.
