circa 1960 - Ridgeway arms on A6.

What a quiet inviting junction on the A6 this is! Those two sauntering across the road wouldn't stand a chance today.

I well remember the cobbles on Tanners Brow. In the early '60's I started work at Horwich Loco Works and cycled to work daily from Wigan. On one occasion I overtook the Wigan bus going up Tanners - to much cheering from my workmates on the bus and much swearing by the bus-driver as I went past his cab.

Yes I remember going to work at Horwich Loco, I only had to ride from Aspull. I didn't use Tanners Brow, I went onto the A6 at Scot Lane Ends, it was much better and flatter.

I doubt if I could wrench the bike up the first bit up to the A6 now Ken. I was only 17 then and cycling mad - Tanners was the highlight of the ride home. The entire male family on my mother's side worked or had worked on Horwich Works so when I left school I automatically followed the tradition. 2 years later I left and got an office job in Bridgeman Terrace Wigan - dare I say it (the tax office).

Often when going from Horwich to play with the Blackrod Band I would walk up Tanners Brow especially when carolling at Christmas and the buses were infrequent. A famous singer John Mitchinson was raised in a house near the top and a Bob Moss ran a carriers using his Bedford Dormobile.
