hi ron where is this located in platt bridge
No Idea. It ain't there now. I'll check on an old map of the area. If I find where it was? I'll post it on here.
Just checked and the house was in the vicinity of where Lily lane starts. There is no Lilly Lane shown on the map. So I would think the house was demolished to make way for the road.
Just found out the doctors surgery near the lights is/was, called PLATT HOUSE
thanks ron any more
Only just seen this. This is a very interesting subject for me because of the following reason .Yes, the doctors house was Named Platt house and his name was John Watson. I was actually born on the corner of Warrington Rd. and Tram st (No56) When we moved house to number ! Warrington Rd Hindley there was a paving stone set in the floor with three crosses on and each side was marked differntly. One was Hindley One was Ince and one was Abram ! Now comes the interseting part. Where the labour club and sherwood house were built was a claypit. The clay the was extracted was very suitable for lining the shafts of various collieries including Low Hall and repairing the leeds liverpool canal!!
The extraction left a large depression which quickly filled with water and a drain was dug which extended from the depression with its opening covered by a large steel gate. The channel then ran UNDER a row of houses and uner a cobbled area known as the parochial yard, then under the mai road in a culvert and it was further culverted under our house, across the field and into another culvert which discharged into the River Glaze, (The stinking brook) Since our house was built over the culvert and we could hear it running during heavy rain the house was officially named "Bridge House" I remember Dr Watson coming to ask my dad could he call his house bridge house for postal purposes and whilst he agreed Hindley council would not. All this took place in about 1935.
That was invaluable for anybody interested in the history of Platt Bridge. Thanks, Eddie. (I can just about remember you, but I know exactly where you lived - I lived in New Street and went to Holy Family school).
I lived in new street platter bridge in the 60s first house after Edwards bakery emuds
Does anyone know if Platt House was a private dwelling or was it used for something else ie religious purpose as there seems to be a section of the garden, to the left on the photo bounded by a wall that has what seems a grotto with a cross above.
Would love to know.
