It is Barons , they also had a stall in The Market Hall.the man on the right if Joe Harrison he eventually took over the shop. I was an order boy for this shop when Joe Harrison was in charge . The sign bellow the window read Premier Butcher, I had to clean it with brasso . Mr Harrison was a very kind man.
Tom - was the shop on the 'bottom' stretch of Gidlow Lane, near the junction of Gidlow Lane and Pagefield Street.
I seem to remember seeing a copy of this pic in the photo collection of a relation some years ago, and being told one of the women was a distant relation - possibly a member of the Finney family, from Standish L.G.
Tony, yes it is on Gidlow Lane. The original stone plaque on the building is still in situ on the apex near the roof with the initials M&B and a date on.
Just checked The date above the shop, which is on the corner of Gidlow Lane and Pagefield street, says says AD 1901 Is this the correct location??
The butchers shop was just a bit further up than Pagefield Street Ron. Its located In the same row as what is now the Brick / Queens hall charity shop.
Come on Tom you worked there where was it?<g> Which shop is there now?
You're right Ron with your description Ron . On next corner further down was Winnard's Confectioners ,
best pies in Wigan at that time ,Gladys was green manageress she took over the bossiness when Mr Winnard retired .
The butchers shop in this photo is not the one on the corner of Pagefield Street and Gidlow Lane. This butchers shop is in the middle of a block of about 5 or 6 buildings. The last time I went past it was vacant. Prior to that it sold furniture.
