I'm torn between Wigan Wallgate and Central Station.
I'll guess at Wigan Wallgate?

Ozy is hast to be in Wigan.....
Wigan world .

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 26th March 2024 at 11:25

It looks too long and too "closed-in" for Wigan Wallgate, and I don't recall Wigan Central. I'm going to go with Lawrence on Wigan North Western as he seems very sure, even naming the platform! It's a lovely photo....I love old railway stations! (It could even be Ketchworth, Veronica!)

Comment by: Veronica on 26th March 2024 at 12:48

I had a feeling it was North Western because of the steps but I have never been on the old CentralStation. Yes I thought that too Irene. Imagine it in the fog…

Comment by: DerekB on 26th March 2024 at 12:48

I think this is Wigan North Western. Just in view to the right are steps leading up to the platform. All the platforms at North Western were only able to be accessed by steps leading up to them.

Comment by: John H. on 26th March 2024 at 13:17

Look at a 1" map for Wigan; the station is at the 6-figure grid reference (SD) 580 054

Comment by: Keith on 26th March 2024 at 13:38

Wigan North West doesn't have a curved platt form.

Comment by: Ian on 26th March 2024 at 13:42

Irene, I also agree and would say that it is the old Wigan North Western Railway Station.
There are clearly steps just behind the man and these look like steps to get to and from the platform(s); I do not remember Wigan Wallgate having steps going down from the platforms as the platforms were/are on a lower level to the roads and ticket offices.
The curve can be quite deceptive, because photographs can be deceiving. I would say that the Wigan Wallgate line is a more severe curve going through the station than the Wigan North Western line and the curve seen above does not look too severe: more of being straight at one point and then curving. If this is looking towards Wallgate, then the line (Wigan North Western) would vurve to the right.
Also, were Wigan Wallgate platforms ever flagged and if so, from when and to which date?
By the way, this is only, as to say, my guess.

Wigan North Western

Comment by: Lawrence Thorpe on 26th March 2024 at 15:54

Definitely Wigan NW platform 10 if stood on platform 6 now ,Straight across was platform 10 ,Station modernised 1972 used to work there .

Comment by: Sam on 26th March 2024 at 16:10

Wigan north- west station only has 6 platforms and never had 10.
The platforms are straight too.
Perhaps it's not even in Wigan.

Comment by: Meg on 26th March 2024 at 16:10

I think it must be Wigan North Western. The steps on Wallgate go up not down. I only have vague memories of Central but I don't remember steps.

Definitely a LMS British railways station from the 50s. If you don't know what LMS means, London Midland and Scottish region.

Worked at Wigan Nw Station ,1968/1976. 10Platforms till1972/6 Platfoms to present day ,Sam platform 10 was slightly curved .

Have you lot no imagination, that's where Harry, Ron and Hermione get to go to Platform 9 ¾, and I see young Harry has left his wand on the station buffet window ledge again, if not wands it's owls.

Comment by: tuddy on 26th March 2024 at 22:04

I think Wigan Central had a wooden platform.

Comment by: Garry on 27th March 2024 at 02:14

After reading these comments, I have to agree that it is Wigan Noth West station, I hadn't seen the stairs upto the platforms at first though, but if Lawrence Thorpe worked at the station, how can anyone disagree.

Comment by: Stuart on 27th March 2024 at 07:42

Lawrence is correct. This was Wigan North Western, platform 10. Sorry, Sam but you sweeping statement is factually incorrect. Up until the modernisation which was undertaken at the same time as the main line was electrified in the early 70s. As Lawrence suggests, if you stand on the present day platform 6, you can see where platform 10 used to be. Platform 6 was platform 9 and there was a bay platform at the north end between the present platforms 5 and 6 and there were two south facing bays between the present platforms 5 and 6 and, they were numbered 7 and 8. There are pictures of these long gone platforms in the WiganWorld albums, if you look carefully.

So would this line be the main one that goes up to Scotland? Only asking because I boarded the train and it stopped just outside Windermere where I was heading for. That’s if the line is still there? I’ve forgotten the number of the platform but it was very long the steps were to the left. It’s where folk catch the train for Blackpool.

Comment by: Garry on 27th March 2024 at 16:31

Yes Veronica, it's the former LMS
London Midlands and Scottish railway. From London Euston to Glasgow Central.

Comment by: Veronica on 27th March 2024 at 17:38

I thought it was Garry. I would rather see it as it was then…full of character. Although I do remember as a child going through the station for the train to Blackpool and the walls to the platform always seemed to be drenched with water and not nice to walk through.

Comment by: Susan on 27th March 2024 at 19:17

LNER went to Scotland to. London to Edinburgh but not this line.

Comment by: Veronica on 27th March 2024 at 20:48

The train I went on was bound for Glasgow. The year before there was a train straight through to Windermere but that was on a platform on the opposite side. It’s now been discontinued unfortunately. It was a lot quicker arriving in Windermere than by changing for another train. Having said that we only had 15 minute wait.

"I think Wigan Central had a wooden platform."

You are absolutely right.
As a kid in the late 1960's I used to collect cigaraette / cigar packets and match boxes. I Clearly remember going underneath the old wooden platform to rummage and coming out with a few old Wild Woodbine cigarette packets. Happy days!

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 31st March 2024 at 10:46

It's not Wigan Central Station, most of the public platforms were in timber.
I cannot recall what the Northwest Station looked like before it was modernised but the way it curves to the right makes me think more of Wigan Wallgate but perhaps Lawrence is right.
