Alas no more nor will ever be after the wanton destruction of our famous town..

Silcock’s travelling fair still exists Alan.

It says Flying Saucer on the truck behind but those are definitely Waltzer's on the back the trailer in front.
Wonder what ever happened to the 1877 clock on the Market Hall? I bet that finished up in Land Fill! Another Victorian loss to the town.
Perhaps the Council could now tarmac over what is left of the Galleries then we could have again the two Wigan Fairs back and put some fun back into the town.

What's that hideous eyesore of a building in the background ??? Thank god that's no longer there..!!

Comment by: Cyril on 12th December 2023 at 20:35

Gareth, that hideous eyesore lasted 112 years compared to the hideous eyesore that replaced it, and which only lasted a mere 34 years!

Colin, those carved stones were apparently saved and put into storage at the secret warehouse where all the council treasures are stored. Doubt they'd be tarmacadaming as they've high rise buildings planned for there, no idea when as apparently the money has run out and the Chinese aren't stumping up with any Yen.

Cyril,
I have been trying to track down the old timber bow window that use to front Bakers Jewel Casket shop on Market Place. It used to be on display at the bottom of the stairs from the Rodney Street entrance to the Central Library in the 1970's, so far without luck.
Last week I got talking to two people from the council who said it was probably in storage in Makerfield, not sure if they meant Makerfield Way on the way to Hindley were the tip is.
Perhaps they have Princess Diana's marble plaque there too from when she opened the Galleries and more items of interest that we will probably never get to see.
