Ron, is this The King Of Prussia Yard off Hallgate or am I on the wrong spot?
I love this little house..I say ‘little’ because the doorway is so small and it looks full of character. At the same time it looks well cared for. I’m imagining the owners planting a climber around the ‘cottage door’… so much character that’s been ‘vanquised’ around Wigan. A lot that needn’t have been.
I agree Veronica, though some of the old black and white pictures sometimes make a scene look a bit grim but you can imagine this picture in Summer with roses around that door looking lovely and the leaded window look pristine and quite expensive.
I could picture myself sat outside in a rocking chair having kicked of my clogs, clay pipe in one hand and pie in the other thinking what a wonderful simple life.
You are spot on Colin.
The building in the far background will be the Bricklayers pub roof, or the shop next door to it.

Powells Yard was between Bishopgate and the King Of Prussias Yard but did not go through to Hallgate. I think the building at the back is The King of Prussia pub and its yard was to the right of it.
The building as said was once Ted Spencer’s barbers. Am I correct in thinking that his previous one was on Standishgate not far from what was Mark Williams ?
I was once told that Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed in the building above ; but where didn’t he ?
Philip, amongst many other places and other people!, I think Bonney Prince Charlie supposedly stayed across Bishopsgate/Hallgate in a building that might have been called The Manor House on the site of that monstrous extension to those lovely buildings on Crawford Street or on land which is now Dorning Street where the Anvil Pub is.
In earlier times of the unluck Stuarts during the English Civil War the Earl of Derby stayed in a pub in the Market Place where Lowe's used to be, next to the Black Horse, now a TUI shop.
Dejected and defeated and pursued by Oliver Cromwell's men after the Battle of Wigan Lane and the death of Sir Thomas Tyldesley, Lord Derby's ally the Duke of Hamilton made his retreat north with his men through Standish. He wanted to stay with us but we told him we only had two bedrooms, little food and that the Co-op was closed so sent him back to Scotland with flea in his ear.
Bonnie Prince Charlie did get around…and he did get lots of help escaping. I’ve read that he spent a night in the Parish Church tower and at Walmesley House on Bishopgate.
He died in his own bed anyway of a stroke in Rome.
Is that house from that time?
Coilin Yes the KING OF PRUSSIA pub was back to back with this building.
Philip, below is a link to a photo of Walmsley House which billeted Prince Charles, the bonnie one, and it's on the Album, uploaded by Ron.

Went to Wetherspoons in Wigan yesterday for lunch, there are two fascinating pictures on the walls one regarding the Battle of Wigan Lane in the English Civil War and one regarding the The Young Pretender (Charles Edward Stuart) in Wigan, it states:
The Young Pretender passed through Wigan, lodging in Hallgate. The Duke of Northumberland arrived not long after the Highlanders had left and was greeted by Bell Ringing.
