Ron, this is one of the oldest buildings between King Street and the bridge. It appears on the 1945 map along with the Swan and Railway and the Victoria Hotel. Its grounds went back to the iron footbridge, but later were reduced and eleven railway sidings were built up to it. The west side of Wallgate was rebuilt apart from The Swan and the Victoria.
In 1894 the York Chambers were built over the tunnels, the Victoria given a major facelift and this building given its stylish appearance, overall giving a grand impression to arriving rail passengers.
Thanks for the picture, on a quite Sunday morning when the weather is nice just take slow walk around around parts of the town centre and look up at the eclectic mix of architectural styles and features on many of the buildings, in their day they must have cost a fortune. The Market Place, Wallgate and Library Street are particularly interesting.
When I was a student I used to work in a men's boutique on Saturdays which was named Bensons. It was directly over the railway. Immediately to the right was an Army and Navy shop. To the left ,closer to King St was a cafe, I can't remember the name of the proprietors ,their daughter went to the Convent.
I don't grasp that Norman.
If It was directly over the railway Immediately to the right would be the Victoria pub?
Think he meant directly over from....
Twenty eight year's ago, I went to a 60th birthday party in one of those buildings, I think it was the one with the round glass at the top.I was then The Masonic Hall.
The Masonic Hall, which was probably the Tower Building(s) as it is known, is on the opposite side of the road, slightly further down, opposite the NorthWestern station...
Yes, its above a row of shops including Alans Bike Shop 49 Wallgate. Opposite the Victoria Hotel (As Was)
Not many nice shops around Wigan, they've been than over by junk shops.
