7th May 1927 from my Fathers Album. According to his diary this was a Saturday afternoon cycle ride from Pemberton (lodging on Ormskirk Road) via Orrell Mount-Standish-Dangerous Corner-Hunters Hill then onto Parbold-Bispham-Rufford (stop for cups of tea at Davies cafe) before heading back via Ormskirk-UpHolland - Pem (lodgings.)
In the photo is his cycle or as he puts it in the album to make up for the lack of "human interest."
In the 50's this location was one of the family walks from Standish. It's over 55 years since I last visited this spot.

Barrie, it reminds me of the old Miners Paths or Pads as they would call them, there's one going through Lady Mabel wood at Haigh which led to the Dairy Pit. Where we lived in the 1950s there was still a slag heap and other remains from the local pit, also there was still a path which led from there to Union Bridge on Ormskirk Road, this was called Norley Pad, Plane Avenue now runs along there

Barrie this track is top end of Hillside ave, it runs from Hilldale to the Hunters hill quarry.

Another good photo of a different time & place Barrie.
Must have been a rough ride on that stony path.

Helen it is a very rough ride, its very rocky so you cant get any speed up so its a long slog.

It would be a hard slog going along these rough pads Mick, they wasn't built for bikes, it's bad enough walking and wearing ordinary shoes, those miners and quarriers would have worn hob nailed or iron clad clogs to keep their feet straight

In the album along with this view are some other photos he took looking in different directions. I'll upload another one in due course. No views of the quarry though. The cycle he rode was a Truimph ordered from the manufactures depot in Manchester Sept.1926 and delivered the next day. the price was £7-12-6d. Would you get that service now?
