Yet another view of Wigan Market Place c. early 1950's

Maybe taken on a Wednesday afternoon with Market Place looking quiet with not many folks around shopping.

The telegraph pole behind the Ring 'o Bells pub and the bakery looks to be very tall, I've never noticed that on other photos of Market Place, and with the area around there at the time being tightly enclosed with buildings and yards I'm thinking it could be around the top of Coopers Row or the Wiend maybe?

Wow! What a brilliant photo!

It is a good clear clock Veronica, as was the one outside Bakers, and like that there is writing on the face as though advertising something, you can see it on the 23/02 PaD, but it isn't readable, on the recent photo you can see that the wall bracket is still there but no clock unfortunately.

Three words Veronica that says it all.

Cyril it’s said that “ time and tide wait for no man” perhaps the clock was thrown in a skip or taken by the one who dismantled it and kept safe as a souvenir… on the other hand it could be with th’owd soldier that went AWOLin the park. What a pity that was…

My Dad once said Wigan looked a lot like Chester many years ago and this picture does in fact prove his point.

Not a Turkish Barbers, Nail Bar, Overpriced Coffee Shop in site...

CJAlan, the shocking fact is that much of the destruction of those parts of the town centre occurred not so long ago.
I believe, much of what can be seen here (buildings & shops) on this postcard was not much different in the early 1970's. Then, the changes came and we can see where.
