I think the stump to the left may be the base of the Celtic cross visible in the 1967 view from about this angle. Perhaps it suffered from vandalism, rather than being removed by the Council when they were reorganising the gardens. There are signs and benches relating to the Wars in the Gardens nowadays.

Thanks Rev Long, good photo but I much prefer the 1960s photo from the Wigan Observer, not because of the quality but better times in terms of tidiness.

Good photo and quality but not has tidy from the black and white seen. I often ask myself why do older photos of places look much more cleaner and safer.
Like the old fashion lamp post
though.

The old men were sitting just about where the waste bin is on that photo. They looked to be WW1 veterans they would have had much in common to talk about in those days as old men did.. I agree the sixties photo has a timeless quality about it.

Think the grass area
Was part of the old
Cemetery, ,they wealthiest people buried with in church walls ,the poorer were born outside of walls
