I still think of the railway bridge here. Showing my age !

Plan was to close these down, and Roger Stott the MP wanted to paint them like two big pies.
But because of the IRA blowing up the ones in Warrington it all changed and Wigan where kept in use

Same with the Gas tower…it always seems like there’s something missing whenever I’m on the bus going through the lights. All that’s left of the entrance to the Gasworks is a partially cobbled road leading nowhere. My dad worked there from 1946 to 1986.on retirement. That sort of long life job doesn’t happen very often these days,

We used to live just around the left hand corner..next door but one to Lily Smiths dress shop..our house didn't look much from the outed but inside was lovely, intricate mouldings around the ceiling and in the hallway. Six foot wall heaters set by smokeless fuel in dining room..they warmed every inch of the house...and then guess what it had to be demolished with the rest of the houses, and what for,I think there are about a dozen car parked on the land now.

Ron. Thank you for another wonderful photograph of Wigan.
By the way, the section of road leading down to the cars is Darlington Street East and beyond the cars is Darlington Street. This information is to help viewers who aren't sure of the area.
I know this area very well, because my grandparents lived in one of the terraced houses shown in the photograph. This certainly brings back a lot of happy memories as I spent a lot of time at my grandparents' house.
My grandfather worked at those Gas Works for many years and up to his retirement. I am not sure when he started there, but I know that he started his working life at a very young age due to my great grandfather's early death (he was only in his thirties). My grandfather, being the eldest of about six children, had to leave school and get a job to help to support the family.
Additionally, for those people who are interested in Wigan artists and local art, Harry Walder lived in one of the terraced houses shown in the photograph.

It's not my picture Ron but there is a picture of mine from a similar angle under Darlington Street in the archive.

I had forgotten how huge these gasometers were, the picture is from Darlington Street East and Ian I do remember Harry Walder living along there and visiting many times with his daughter Marina who was a colleague of mine at Wigan Poster Writing Co. on the corner of Chapel Lane and Douglas Street. We lost touch many years ago.

Colin, I went to my grandparents for my lunch when I was at one particular school and when I was at college as the distances were not too far to walk. Also, I went for my lunch in my early years of employment.
Harry Walder lived next door to my grandparents and I regularly saw him and many times I had a chat to him. Also, on a number of occasions, he showed me some of his paintings.
Additionally, I remember once taking Harry's daughter home as I had my car with me at my grandparents' house - she was going to catch the bus and so I offered to run her home.
What a small world it is!
Sorry to hear you lost touch with her many years ago.
